You need to create a blog list (one of the gadgets you can add). You will have to re-enter everyones blog addresses into it. Then you can have it arrange them alphabetically or by the most recently updated. You can have it show all of the blogs you follow (which would eleminate the need for your list you have now) or just the 5 that were most recently updated. It doesn't however show you when private blogs update.

PS make sure you hit save after (I always forget to) cuz if you don't you will have to do it again.
